What should the automotive industry do to improve vehicle sales?

I think that finding alternative fuels is the first step.

I was gonna suggest giving a free lifetime supply of fuel with each purchase.

But, seriously, vehicles sales shouldn't need improving. Everyone's looking for a new vehicle almost everyday.

The trick is, getting them to take notice in your dealership and what you can offer that others may not.

And this is , in no way, directed towards your Walt Massey, just a point i'd like to make.

One important thing, is your employees on the sales floor. They have to connect and understand your customer's needs towards a vehicle purchase. They can't just do a "song and dance" tell the customer what they want to hear; then do the opposite of everything they've said when it comes down to negotiating prices and features.

Customers know what to expect, and if the salesman only has one interests, his "pocketbook", customers will see it coming a mile away, and it could disuade them from being interested with doing business with your company, and may never return.

You HAVE to make that customer enjoy their car buying experience from your dealership, so when the thought of buying a new vehicle come to mind, they'll remember, "Hmm. That was a good place we got this last car from. Let's go see what they've got on the lot, now."

As i said, overall vehicle sales shouldn't need improving, it's the individual dealership sales that need to improve, and it's tough getting customers to take notice in what your dealership has to offer ... so, when you do get unexpected visits from new customers, you have to make sure they're as comfortable as can be when dea;ling with your dealership for the first time.
